Sutler Tokens

Sutler tokens were issued by businessmen, small shopkeepers really, who followed Civil War regiments with wagons full of goods in which the soldiers would be interested. Typically, the sutlers offered pencils, socks, ink and pen, paper, soap, canned foods, bread, knives, needles and thread, your everyday minor goods! Each sutler had specific tokens for his own clientele, hence the relatively small number needed and the scarcity of the tokens today.

These tokens were cataloged by David Schenkman in his CIVIL WAR SUTLER TOKENS AND CARDBOARD SCRIP. We occasionally come across specimens of this book; however, the books are out of print and command retail values of $100 or more. Let us know if you need a book.

The following sutler tokens were posted for sale 23 August, 2011. Call or email for current availability. All items are guaranteed genuine, essentially as described and properly graded or your money cheerfully refunded!
